Sand Gnats win fourth straight

COLUMBUS -- Jason Bergmann gave up only one run in seven innings to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats to a 5-1 victory over the South Georgia Waves in a South Atlantic League game on Wednesday night.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander allowed only five hits, walked two and struck out six teo snap a a three-game losing streak and improve to 4-5.

Joseph Maruffi, who joined the team earlier in the day, pitched the final two innings as the Sand Gnats (24-29) won their fourth straight to tie their season high.

Savannah took a 1-0 lead in the first on Chad Chop's RBI single and then scored three runs in the fourth on a solo home run by Chop and a two-run homer by Salomon Manriquez.

Leigh Neuage took the loss for South Georgia, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings.
